Something that I posted less than 24 hours ago now has my eighth-largest number of kudos on AO3 and the fourth-largest number of comments. Everything that has a higher comment number was a Yuletide gifts.

I've never been on a fandom wave when it was rolling before. This is an interesting ride.

(It's here if you're curious. Good Omens, Established relationship Ineffable Spouses but the ship isn't the point, Warlock is stuck in Texas and his parents don't understand him. Nothing big but do read the warnings.)

I really need to be writing for one of 5 different ongoing projects, so what am I doing? Writing some unconnected whump. C'mon, writing brain, do better.

You ever stumble across a thing that is over 10 years old on the Internet and go "Oh, wow, this is great, a decade of fanworks to flip through!" And then you poke around on AO3 and find a grand total of three fics?

There's fanart out there; I checked DeviantArt. Most of it's 5 years old or more, but it's out there. But so far either there isn't any fic, or it's on the Pit and I don't want to go there.

*sigh* This is what happens when the fandom is 95% dudes, isn't it? Dammit.

It's the DW version of the Ao3 Stats Meme again!

Top 5 Stories By Hits:
Not For Sale (Firefly, Mal/Simon, Porn Battle IX): 7416
Programs and Users Have a Common Descent (Tron x Eureka, gen, Sci-Fi Fantasy Big Bang 2011): 3919
Bar the Door (Firefly, Jayne/Simon): 2618
Visions of Futures Passed (Star Trek (2009 movie), Bones/Spock Prime, Porn Battle IX): 2478
Spun Right Round (Eureka x Buckaroo Banzai, gen, Sci-Fi Fantasy Big Bang 2009): 2283

The next story is another Mal/Simon fic; nothing else has over 2000.

Top 5 Stories By Kudos:
Not For Sale (Firefly, Mal/Simon, Porn Battle IX): 306
Endless Beat (Singin' In The Rain, Cosmo/Don/Kathy, Springkink 2010): 176
Grist For the Rumor Mill (Singin' In The Rain, Cosmo/Don): 171
Visions of Futures Passed (Star Trek (2009 movie), Bones/Spock Prime, Porn Battle IX): 142
Good Vibes (Ghostbusters (1984 movie), Egon/Ray, SmallFandomFest Round 5): 127

Two repeats - not surprising, given that higher views mean more potential for kudos. Shoutout to the SitR fandom; there aren't a lot of fics, even fewer that aren't AU, and they are appreciative of the ones they get.

Visions of Futures Passed (Star Trek (2009 movie), Bones/Spock Prime, Porn Battle IX): 15 (tie)
Leaking the Secrets (Ghostbusters (1984 movie), Egon/Peter, Rounds of Kink Round 12): 15 (tie)

Oh, hey, my lone Transformers fic, good to see you here. Otherwise, three repeats and another GB entry.

What almost all of these have in common is that they're old - all but one of these are from 2008-2010, and the exception is 2011. So they've had more time to build up hit counts and everything else that comes with them. Several of these are from larger fandoms (Firefly & Trek, in particular) than I normally write for. I'm a little surprised that the entries for what is still by a nontrivial margin my largest writing fandom are both GB rather than RGB, but I suppose any RGB fics with an M or higher rating are potential childhood-ruiners.

I haven't uploaded anything yet this year. I should try and fix that.

My being exhausted all this week has meant that I have gotten barely any writing done. I got the last two scenes of the Big Bang fic that I'd already finished fleshed out, but the less plotty, more smutty one is only half done.

Well, I say half done. It is in terms of word count for the Bang. In terms of eventual story length, I'm guessing this is currently closer to a quarter, possibly a fifth, of the total word count.

Sometime in the next few months, we gonna have us some smut, I tell you what.

*looks at the Yuletide tag set*

. . . I don't think I'm doing Yuletide this year.

Probably just as well; I don't know if I'll have free time in November. But disappointing all the same.

I probably will do [community profile] fandom_stocking, although I don't know how many GB/RGB, Monkees, and/or TGWTG/CA folks it really has, and I'm not really doing much writing outside those three fandoms right now. Eh, I can probably get it together to write a few DW or MCU flashfics, at least.

End of first draft: 29,000 words in 66 pages.

And it never gets shorter in editing, no matter how much I try.

Oh, lawd.

On the writing front, this goofy thing is at just over 20,000 words, and I have four and a half scenes plus the epilogue to go.

And for the first time in a long time, I really want/need a beta. Not because I doubt my writing, but because this is a large and sprawling fandom, and I just can't watch all of it. It's been a long time since I started ficcing on a canon I wasn't up to date on. Given how flexible canon is in this universe, that's not as bad as it might sound, but it's still enough for me to need another pair of eyes from the same fandom. Too bad I don't know anyone there yet.
omorka: (Default)
I have eight scenes from the outline out of an original 14 left to go, and I'm at 12,000 words. If this isn't a novella it'll be very close to it.

It is intensely frustrating to me that people are still having arguments about slashfic 45 years after the first K/S. We're here, we're queer, and we're in ur canons, slashing ur d00dz (& laydeez) - get used to it!

Here we go for another year! Yay!

A fanfic meme, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] calliopes_pen:

I was thinking you should tell me about stories you think I should write. I mean, if you could sit me down for a day or whatever and say, "I want you to write this story for me," what would that story be?

I'm not actually promising to *write* any of these, mind you, but it's fun anyway. And who knows if I'll be inspired!

Hey, I need something to keep me occupied over Spring Break . . .

Yuletide!

The last couple of years I'd gotten more than one story, so this year when I saw I'd only gotten my assigned one, I was a wee bit disappointed.

I shouldn't have been.

Etch out a Future of Your Own Design (13741 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Real Genius (1985)
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mitch Taylor/Chris Knight, Mitch Taylor/Jordan
Characters: Mitch Taylor, Chris Knight, Jordan
Summary:

Chris keeps in touch.

So, what can I say?

First, the title. The title. For those who don't recognize it, that's from Thomas Dolby's "Windpower," which is one of my favorite songs - and somewhat obscure. Choosing a Thomas Dolby song for a Real Genius fanfic? Appropriate. Choosing a Thomas Dolby song that isn't "Blinded Me With Science?" A damn nice touch. Choosing the one that's my go-to- regain-some-faith-in-humanity song? Wow. Just - wow.

Second - this story is well into novelette territory, over half of novella length. And none of it is padding - every scene develops character. And this is mostly about character, although there is a plot and it does resolve quite nicely. The author has a wonderful grip on the canon characters, and develops how they would change and grow over the next fifteen-some-odd years in a completely believable fashion.

Spoilers & sex past this point )

In short: SQUEE! I loved this more than I can properly explain. More, I feel like my Yulegoat cared enough to look at my other fandoms (and possibly my music selections) to draw extra inspirations from. (Note: since I'm not caught up on canon, I didn't list Eureka as one of my fandoms this year, so they couldn't have gotten that one just from the Yulegoat Letter.) It's always so nice when someone puts the time and effort in to do a little research. <3
