At4W fandom got me so spoiled, y'all. So. Spoiled. Wikis and timelines and episode cross-referencing and TVTropes ahoy for every character.

I don't know if I can handle doing the deep dive and watching another videographer age ten years (eleven, technically) in a week while I watch, without the tropes and the timelines and old fics getting jossed as we go. Even most of the fanart I've found is less than five years old. Granted, I think there are only five or six characters to keep track of and two of them are one-offs, but still, the difference in the online fandoms as far as I've found is - stark. True, the actual amount of content is significantly less (Lewis uploads between twelve and forty minutes, with occasional forays up to well over an hour, almost every week; Alan uploads between three and twelve minutes about once a month), but this guy's been out there forever and why is there so little fic, ugh.

So goddamn spoiled.

I don't wanna go back to Tumblr. I really, really don't. I don't like it, and I don't feel like I have an audience there.

But it seems like all my fandoms that have any action only have it there.

Dang.

On the bright side, Atop the 4th Wall was accepted as a Yuletide nomination. So that's something.

I have just about decided that I can't keep up with Tumblr and it's silly for me to try. Unfortunately, the Monkees fandom only seems to exist there and on Facebook, and I am not even attempting any fandom activity on Facebook; most of the people I have on there are either former students or family members. Most of the fanart end of the Channel Awesome/Chez Apocalypse famdom seems to be Tumblr-centric, too. *sigh*

I wish this sort of blogging-focused social networking was still popular. There are not words for how much I hate Facebook, and text posts more than three sentences long don't get responses on Tumblr. I don't mind Twitter, but it has pretty severe limitations and IMHO isn't much good for fandom stuff other than news and roleplaying. I end up writing twelve-tweet essays because of the character limit.

Ah, well. At least there are a few folks still left here. I'm going to attempt to journal more often this year, although a lot of the time that's likely to be the "altar log" type posts (which I should be doing more often anyway).

The end-of-semester crash-crunch has been interesting this year - very intense and very stressful, but at least I never felt out-of-control with it this year, unlike many of the last seven or so. Unfortunately, I kind of fell off the Earth social-media-wise for a little over a week there, and I left a couple of people hanging. Gotta see what I can do to patch that up over the next few days. I love my job, now more than ever, but wow, I need to get a better handle on grading.

My Fandom Stocking is here if anyone is inclined towards that sort of thing. My listed fandoms have shifted a bit in the last couple of years; I omitted some of the more obscure anime ones, for instance. Not that I have any less love for Mahou Tsukai Tai! or Escaflowne, but listing them makes me feel old. Anyway, I've signed up for one Monkees exchange and one TGWTG/CA one, but if anyone wants to subtly point me in the direction of stockings that need ficlet stuffers in fandoms I've written before, have at.

As for what I want non-fannishly for Yule (other than for a certain hotel/reality TV huckster to quit playing at politics and go away before he moves the Overton window permanently), the usual small things - nice yarn, nice teas, interesting cookbooks - all apply. I'm really not in the market for toys and games this year; I have too many I haven't played or played with sitting on the shelf. I do want a chiminea for the back patio-yard-lot-thing, but those are heavy and I want to pick it out myself. I also want a burr coffee grinder, as the tiny little blade grinder we inherited from the MiL is a piece of crap, but I can't find one at a reasonable price point, so I can't really ask for anyone else to get one for me - I might end up letting that be my gift from my parents.

Two more school days. Let's get this done.

The TGWTG/CA/CA fandom has gone rather quiet on LJ/DW, and I don't have nearly enough fucking time or patience to try and trawl it on Tumblr (project for this summer, probably). This state of affairs is not new to me; I tend to stumble into fandoms just as they're entering either a lull or a long slow slide into obsolescence.

Thus, I'm currently prowling through an old LJ kinkmeme, and I'm discovering something: Oancitizen (one of my favorites, for a dozen reasons) gets tons of prompts, probably more than Phelous and definitely more than Angry Joe, but the ratio of filled to unfilled prompts is a small fraction indeed. This leads me to believe that, at least during the time the kinkmeme was live (which appears to be late '10 through '12), plenty of fangirls wanted to read about Oan, but he didn't strike the fancy of any of the prolific authors. It's a bit sad, honestly. Especially since if I'd been in the fandom at the time I would gladly have thrown myself on several of the prompts. And I was a better author at the time than 75% of the ones filling the kinkmeme prompts were.

A few links that have crossed my screen that I thought were worth noting:

Some excellent crossover costuming from Dragon*Con: The Blues Busters. All I can think is "I looked at the trap, Elwood."

The Time Lords picking up their mail was kind of cool, too.

What the shit is Shinji doing? (h/t [livejournal.com profile] calliopes_pen for this one)

The Wrong Way To Have A Three-Way. Clearly none of the participants thought this through. Makes the usual poly drama look much more survivable, I must admit.

I thought I had another one around here somewhere, but I must have closed the window. Ah, well. I'll post it if I find it.

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] zortified:

I've made a list of 15 characters. You give me a prompt of the sort "1 and 5 go into a bar, who drinks whom under the table and why is 9 the one getting called for bail?" I will respond with a snippet of ficcet.

Not exactly a meme, but [livejournal.com profile] redneckgaijin did a post in which he ranked his preferred Doctors, and I thought I'd do something similar, albeit somewhat less linear.

Dishonorable Mention: The "extra Nines," Rowan Atkinson and Richard Grant. The second for presumably obvious reasons, and the first because I hate Atkinson with the fire of a thousand sentient and wounded suns.

Insufficient Data: One and Two. I simply haven't seen enough of their runs to judge them accurately. The impressions from what I have seen are that I rather like One but am frustrated by the limits of the medium at that point, and that I simply don't care for Two at all - but it's possible that watching more (and better) Troughton could win me over.

Doctors I actively dislike: None. The only one even close to this category is Two, and as I said above, that's probably because I've only seen a few episodes and they weren't very good ones.

Doctors for whom I love the performance and hate the writing: Six, Eight, and Eleven. The glimpses we got of Colin Baker when the script he was given wasn't complete shite were compelling. Paul McGann never got to show us what he could do outside of a poorly-paced regeneration episode. I think if I were watching Matt Smith acting in Moffatt stories edited and arced by RTD, I'd be enjoying him a lot. The problem here is really more that they're forced into crap plots with bad dialogue and (in the first and third cases) companions I periodically would like to set on fire.

Doctors I feel kind of "meh" about: Seven. I never really got into him, although again, the problem isn't McCoy's performance (or Aldred's, either). There's a lot of Seven in Eleven, and I'm not fond of those character traits in that incarnation, either.

Doctors I like but don't love: Five. Not his fault; he came after Four. I wasn't going to settle for the pretty blond guy from All Creatures Great And Small after that. The writing was also uneven, even on the Doctor Who scale of things. I really liked having a non-pair Team Tardis, though.

Doctors I love dearly but would like to give a nice hard kick in the ass much of the time: Three and Ten. Three was - well, on the upside, he's the one who caught Sarah Jane. But I do wonder if one of the reasons Nine was doing the working-class bloke thing was if the aristocrat's impulses Three manifested so thoroughly were so disgusted with himself after the Time War, they de-classed that incarnation. Three had entirely too much tendency to disappear up his own alien ass. And Ten was similarly self-absorbed, although possibly with much better reasons.

Doctors I love with few reservations: Four and Nine. Four probably got this without earning it, both by being my first Doctor and for being the core of my favorite Team Tardis, Doctor/Sarah/Harry. He's an egocentric dick, yes, but he's a kind egocentric dick, and tends to rub your face in his *experience* rather than his *cleverness*. Nine, on the other hand, pushes all my hurt/comfort buttons beautifully, and Doctor/Jack/Rose(/Mickey on the home team) make a great Team Tardis, too. I doubt it's accidental that they're on opposite sides of a "pick your regeneration companion carefully" incident. And I suppose Nine is a first doctor, too, in a way, after so very long. It was when he shouted "Everybody lives!" that I saw Four in him, and fell in love again.

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] calliopes_pen gave me Ghostbusters, Eureka, & Doctor Who.

I have just put a loaf pan full of batter into the toaster oven. Everybody pray that this does not end terribly badly.

And while I'm waiting to find out, here's a fandom meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] bearit:

1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your audience guess as many of the ships as they can.
4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.

Let's see if I can actually think of 20 ships I care strongly enough about to list. Warning: some of these may not be strict pairings - I do poly!ship.

Descriptions Behind The Cut )

Well, the pound cake is not a success - it rose high enough to hit the heating element and almost set off the smoke alarm. Ah, well. I think a half-recipe might work, but I'm not going to try it tonight.

This is the clip from this week's HIMYM with Ernie Hudson in it. For some reason (*glances significantly at icon*), this version's been flipped left to right, reversing the "For Sale" sign.

No idea how long the YouTube link will be live - hopefully long enough for folks to see it, as it really is cute.
