Sturgeon's Law
Jun. 19th, 2008 01:45 amNormally, the number in Sturgeon's Law is a metaphorical number, a stand-in for "a large proportion but not 1." The Canonical number is 90%, although I've seen it quoted with 95% or even 99%. (The Wiki page also cites 98%, which I think I remember seeing cited on Usenet, and 94%, which I can't remember ever seeing and starts to obscure its essentially being a random number.)
It's very rare that I encounter anything for which the proportion that I think is crud really is almost exactly 90%, but Penny Arcade qualifies. The proportion of their strips that I think are really, really dumb - or even offensive - is about 9 out of 10. And then they pop out with gems like this one for the 10th one. Or this.
*sigh* Why is it that jerks occasionally do such good stuff? Then again, these are the guys who called Harlan Ellison an asshole and then pointed out exactly what it meant that they did that.

The last two songs in my iTunes "Purchased" playlist are "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Closer."
This is also yet another data point towards the Revival of the Falsetto.

This is almost as cute as the periodic table of cartoon characters.

Have procured seeding trays to start my plants. This means this weekend I have to get serious about prepping and doing inventory on the supplies I already have.

Why Has No One Told Me About These?
Oct. 14th, 2007 05:59 amFor your edification, I present Dark Lucy and Professor B.
And I just spent four hours clicking around on the TV Tropes wiki (which coincidentally gave me an excuse to use this icon, as the Doctor and Captain Jack fit several of their tropes nicely).

Bishi Christ!
Aug. 25th, 2007 02:45 pmTyndale House Publishers seems to be serious about attracting the youth market for Jesus, but I have to admit their methods seem suspect - I mean, we've had plenty of graphic novels of the Gospels before, right? I don't think borrowing another culture's style is really going to help.
Be sure to click on the image to get the larger version, and check out those disciples! I'm guessing by the eye-size rule that the redhead in the front is Judas.

Also, a Robot Chicken I kind of liked, on the apocalyptic theme.

This episode of Home on the Strange is amusing. (Someone posted it to
dark_christian, where it's even more appropriate, but I thought it bore reposting for those who don't read either the community or the webcomic.)
*giggle* My Time Lord and Savior . . . yeah, I could get behind that.
