The Tau Manifesto, or why 2π is more important than π. As a trig teacher, I'm one of the culprits here. And while I don't think the half-turn/full turn distinction makes that much of a difference, mathematically - twos are a dime a dozen in formulae, anyway, and I prefer Euler's formula with the negative sign - I agree that getting kids to remember that π radians is half a circle can be tricksy.

Date: 2010-06-30 02:19 am (UTC)THEY LIE. They changed the software at work a couple weeks ago, and now my job which previously required about two brain cells suddenly requires me to DO MATH. CONSTANTLY.
(Hard math! Counting, and sometimes multiplication! I mean, normally my job involves carrying heavy boxes and putting them on shelves. now it involves putting heavy boxes on shelves then figuring out what 18x3 is! WITHOUT A CALCULATOR!)
;-)
So you can assure your students that YES they will need math when they get out of school. I can sign an affidavit!
