omorka: (Weird In Concert)

Went to the Webb Wilder show at the Black Swan tonight.

*sigh* I hate the Swan, I really do. The chairs are tiny, the tables are tiny, the isles are tiny, the food is crazy overpriced, and there's no room to dance. It's a British tourist trap, except it's a couple blocks from 59. And tonight it smelled like overheated oil all night. There are very few things that could tempt me to show up there, these days. But Webb Wilder is one of them.

It was just him and another guitarist, and a very pared-down sound. I enjoyed it a lot, although most of the first set was stuff I've only heard once or twice (I haven't listened to his last two albums as much as I should have). There was a lot of guitar showing off, which I enjoyed heartily. And the Spouse and I did get up and dance on "No Great Shakes" even though there wasn't room. (I did it for "Devil's Right Hand," too, but that was just me.)

Webb really gets into the music; there aren't many male singers with voices like that, and he works every octave. He was as good a showman as usual, and did the hat twirl a couple of times.

I didn't have any "aha!" moments or fall into the music, but then, they didn't do "Hoodoo Witch," either. *shrug* Not my epiphany tonight; no biggie. Still very enjoyable.

Should listen to his last two albums again.
