The equipment for the band worked great at rehearsal. Now I just need to figure out how to carry it all around.

Then we decided to go see District 9, so we'd have seen at least one of the films we'd intended to catch this summer (well, okay, technically we'd achieved that when we saw the Trek reboot, but still). Man, I knew Peter Jackson was into splatter films, but geez, this thing was gory. And there are a total of three characters in the whole film who aren't dicks. I'd go on about how the whole film is an inditement of humanity, but honestly, the aliens are dicks, too. I'm also vaguely annoyed about the demonization of African traditional religions, although what we see in the film is less religion than folk magick. I don't regret seeing it, but honestly, the short was better - this gave up on social commentary halfway through and just became a really gory action flick with a major body-horror component (and there it is again).

I felt like it continued to have social commentary through the second half. It just continued to make the points which were obvious to most of us from the start. For the video game based younger audience this film is likely to reach I think it did a brilliant job of bringing up serious issues and portraying the consequences of fear and anger. Not an easy ride, but probably an important film.

This is why I'm so hesitant about seeing it. Instead, we went to see Ponyo.

And we definitely need to see that.

It is definitely more for kids than most Miyazaki films. But it is very cute.

You need a body-horror icon. Maybe a scene from "Doctor, Doctor." ;)

The more I hear about this movie the less I want to see it. At least the violence in "King Kong" was part of the plot, sort of. Kinda.

Yes, actually, that'll do nicely.

This first half was great. Then there was lot of running and shooting. Then the last five minutes picked up a bit again.
