Yep yep yep. Spent many an hour there. I believe my first introduction must have been around 1991 - 1993 or so when I'd go see bands at Downtown Grounds. Usually couldn't get a parking place too close, so I'd wind up hoofing a bit. Around that time that I found the Iron Shavings as well, I think. Your spouse may be able to help me pinpoint a year. (Younker could help me penpoint a year, but that's another story).
It has to have been before 1991 - I re-met Younker on Christmas Eve, 1990; and then met you, quantumduck, doctorcaligari and so forth when he brought me to a YPSL meeting in late February/early March, 1991. (I base a lot of my time-marking as pre- or post- meeting y'all, and later dates as pre- or post- omorka...) You took us (I remember JD being on this trip) to a Downtown Grounds show in ... mid-March-ish(?), and had the Iron Shavings litany down and well-read by then. I remember also your taking us to the bridge on that trip, and I think that you said something about AM getting some photos in that area before then. (Something about a boxcar photo with interesting lighting, or possibly IR film - I seem to recall seeing it framed in her room at her folks's place.)
I think we may need quantumduck to give some elucidation here as well...
addenda : Now that I think about it, I think that the Grounds closed up sometime in late 1991, IIRC. When was the last ZZP show there? That might give us a pretty good idea of dating.
Good thinking. I can find documentation of ZZP shows at the Grounds in July 1990 (http://www.webnuns.org/zzp/grafix/July26_1990_firstshow.jpg), July 1991 (http://www.webnuns.org/zzp/grafix/July27_1991.jpg), August 1991 (http://www.webnuns.org/zzp/grafix/poster3.gif), and March 1992 (http://www.webnuns.org/zzp/grafix/poster5.gif).
I remember a Grounds show where they had bad art up on chickenwire, or chainlink, or somesuch. ZZP sounds like the act. Was the keyboardist was back from something? I don't remember clearly, but I DO think that bibulb was there when we found IVES B DANG. Was that on the same night? IVES B was near a boxcar that AM and bassfingers had recalled seeing before. It was not far from the shavings. I climbed up on it, I think. Not that THAT narrows it down. I think the photos that AM had were taken in a different area of the Warehouse dist.
Iron shavings were a permanent fixture of my art box by the time of my senior show. I need to find out when that was. Couldn't have been later than May of 91.
Iron Shavings was mysteriously gone by the time of our '96/97 video work on C4H.
Not that I can be too precise, but I'm pretty sure it has to at least have been before '93, because y'all introduced me to it (along with Iron Shavings) in March or April of '94, and it was obviously an "initiation into the group" kind of thing already - "here, we think you might be interesting enough to hang out with us, so we'll show you two of our sacred spaces, and if you think they're cool, too, you're in."
Which reminds me, did we ever take memeslayer there? If we didn't, we should the next time he's in town. (Which, at the rate things are currently going, may be the next time you're in town. :/ ) Then again, he's been known to do the driving-randomly-around-Downtown, so he may have run across it on his own.
