Joining in various writing festivals/competitions/challenges appears to be a good way to get myself to write. So far, it's been mostly smut. I need to start working on one of the longer non-smut pieces I have outlined. But the smut seems to be more fun, and easier to get done quickly.

Anyway, there are about a dozen prompts up on [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest that I want to write, and the rules are that I can only claim one at a time. And they're not all Eureka and GB/RGB prompts, either! (Although I must admit that the majority are.) So I suspect I'm going to be chaining them through the next few weeks. Summer vacation starting is going to be very handy, indeed.

Also, someone claimed one of my Eureka prompts! *squee!* Not a Fargo one, which makes me a bit sad, but I'm still jazzed to read it.

Oh man, another challenge is probably the last thing I needed, but I'm still tempted by a prompt. At least this one doesn't have a deadline in June; that's something.

I do wonder what exactly qualifies something as a small fandom for it; some of them are fairly large, or at least I thought they were.

Near as I can tell, it's a "we know one when we see one" moderator's-call sort of thing. They explicitly said that Nu!Trek would count for this round only, simply because it's a new fandom. I'm surprised they expected the Watchmen prompts, though.

I was kind of surprised to see "DC Comics" and "Leverage" on there as well. Maybe it's a product of my own fandom circles versus those of the mods, but I wouldn't call either of those small. (And that's not even mentioning the Joss fandoms on there, though I suppose Dollhouse is at least debatable.)

I find it interesting that I have yet to see a community like this with a balance between anime/manga/jrpg fandoms and Western TV and book fandoms; it's all very heavily one or the other. I'm not really sure why.

In this case, I suspect it's because there aren't as many anime/manga/jrpg fandoms that are both small and active. They're either too big, nonexistent, or dead. Having said that, I should have submitted some Mahou Tsukai Tai! prompts, because I bet it would count.

I can think of a few, but overall, yeah, I can see your point. OTOH, I suppose it's entirely possible that it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy - someone looks, sees few anime/manga/jrpg fandoms requested and doesn't request any, either because they assume they aren't really welcome or because it seems less likely someone in that community would write for them.

Anyway, it's just a point of curiosity to me, really. Comms like this one and [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic are mostly Western fandoms while others like [livejournal.com profile] springkink are dominated by Japanese ones and naturally I wonder why it's so rare that fic comms have more of a mix.
