A Matter of Size

Okay, I have several knitted hat patterns here, and some of the sizing is just not making any sense. I have a couple of patterns for which their women's size (or medium) is clearly larger than the men's size (large) for other patterns, and the stretchiness of the knit (or lack thereof) doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

Flist, if you would please do me a favor, could you:

(a) post your hat size, if you know it (I have enough friends who wear fedoras or panamas that this should be a simple matter of checking inside the crown)

(b) if you don't know it and you have a tape measure around, could you measure your head circumference (parallel to the floor, just above the eyebrows) for me?

I'm a 21 1/4" circumference, which puts me somewhere between a 6 3/4 and a 6 7/8 hat size. I vaguely remember my MOB fedora being a 6 7/8, so that sounds right.

I measured twice, just to be sure, and of course got two different measurements. I measured one more time, and took the average. Let's call it 21 1/3 just to be cranky, so yeah. Between 6 3/4 and 6 7/8, I think, like you got. I expect it is a fairly common measurement for a woman. When buying s/m/l hats, I split the difference between smalls and mediums, depending on how the hat is made, I guess, or how accurate their sizing is.

I don't know my hat size...but my circumference is 22 1/2"

Don't recall for 100% certain, but I believe my hat size is 7 3/8. (You may ask, how does a guy who wears a hat every friggin day of the year not know his hat size? But also keep in mind, I only buy a new hat every 3-5 years depending on wear...)

Generally nothing smaller than a 7 - 1/4 will fit me. My favorite hat of the moment is a 7-3/8. I've worn smaller; my hair just has to get wrangled in more.

I'm a 7 1/4 hat size (with a head circumference a smidge under 23 inches).
