Tried a new recipe at Movie Night this week. Shortbread base crust, with cocoa powder added to chocolatize it; nuts sprinkled over that (although I left half nutless, since I have a few anti-nut folks in the crowd); a sort of caramel-butterscotch whisked together on the stovetop and poured over, and the whole mess baked for 30 minutes; chocolate chips sprinkled over the top while still hot, but not spread. It was way, way sweet, although that didn't stop the relatively small crowd from making a relatively big dent in it.

I'm thinking I can modify this to be more to my liking. Omitting the chocolate chips sprinkled over the top might go a long way towards that, first of all. Some of the sugar can be omitted from the shortbread crust, although the sugar is what's holding it together, so there's only so much that I can do there. I could also omit the cocoa powder, although the loss of the bitterness might just make the sweet that much more prominent.

I'm thinking that next time, I might keep the cocoa in the crust, but omit the chocolate chips, double the amount of pecans, and sprinkle a bit of unsweetenned flaked coconut over the top before baking. I'm uncommonly fond of coconut, though, so that might not go over so well as a Movie Night option.

Heh, I read the first paragraph and said to myself "that would be good with coconut!"

In a cut-the-sweetness vein, maybe some add some coffee to the chocolate in the base? For chocolate alternatives, diced dried apricots or apples might be nice.

So does that mean you are an Almond Joy kind of a gal? ;) (I remember you don't like dark chocolate)

If they made something quite like an Almond Joy that used pecans, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, or even walnuts instead of the almonds, I suspect I might well be much more well-acquainted with candy bars than I am. :-) Unfortunately, I am not so very fond of almonds, nor are they all that fond of me.
