Fear of Frying

omorkaWe managed to obtain two new cooking implements over the HanukYulMas holidays: the MIL bought me a deep fryer for Christmas, and while we were out looking for one, the Spouse and I picked up a countertop griller - one of the ones marketed by a particular amiable pugilist - on clearance sale (it's in a color that is apparently going to be out this year).
So far, I've used the griller once. We picked up some boneless pork chops (among other items) from Walton's, and I grilled them up with a little Worcestershire sauce and a sprinkling of Lawry's, which worked reasonably well. I picked up some portobello caps, and I'm looking forward to trying them in there.
Last night AH and JG were over to celebrate New Year's Eve with us. As part of the celebration, I decided to make funnel cake. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the deep fryer to perch correctly on the counter, I had to use two different types of oil (I didn't have enough corn oil, so I added a bottle of walnut oil, which I now need to replace - on the other hand, the effect was kind of interesting, and it was getting towards the end of its useful lifespan anyway), and my funnel wasn't big enough - so I ended up with fritters instead, and I have a minor burn on the back of my right hand. However, the fritters were pleasant enough (I ended up eating mine in between playing with some sparklers that AH bought, which was probably not technically legal, but someone was setting off bottle rockets and larger things two blocks over - we figured that, should the cops show up, they'd have to bust them first).
Tonight, in addition to JG and AH, we also had DG and AK show up briefly, and PB for the entire evening. (DM made noises like he might be here, and then never actually showed up; DB and his spouse M had intended to drop by, but their kid fell asleep early and they just went back to the B's house instead.) Between the anime and the main movie, PB made noises about needing to go get French fries. I asked him whether he wanted the skins on or off. I need about half an inch more oil in the fryer to do fries correctly, it turns out, but they were good anyway, just more done on one side than the other.
I am such a kitchen geek . . .
