omorka: (Weird In Concert)

I didn't actually intend to buy the painting at the Beans show tonight. The Spouse had made a $100 bid at the same time as Rich, who was dressed as Chlamydia Phlegmingway at the time, and since Rich was the one being the Vanna for the painting, he decided that his bid was first. So I upped it to $120. I thought I was safe; a painting hasn't gone for less than $200 in a while. But it appears that everyone was so blown away by the hot girl-on-whatever action (I made Rich sit in my lap, since Woman always does that when a guy bids on the painting) that they forgot to bid. Either that or they were scared that he'd sit in their laps, too. I'm not sure. Anyway, I ended up having the high bid, so we have a new painting. It's not particularly remarkable, as a performance piece goes, except that the figure is wearing glasses, which is somewhat unusual for one of his simple face portraits. But it's always nice to have more Beans art around the place.

The show was high-energy but plagued by glitches - Beans rushed a lot of lyrics, the band started "Orion" when Beans had called for "This Is It" (not that I will ever complain about hearing "Orion"), there were a couple of other miscues at the beginnings of songs, and the Spouse was losing lights right and left, with only one working at the end of the show (and that one not consistently). Also, Beans kept interrupting Rich's lines, although he did at least let the Self-Amplified Guitarisaurus steal the Dark Guitar at the end. And somehow at the end of the show, Beans had not only done something to his knee (not unusual), he'd also banged his left hand and arm on something (the mike stand?) hard enough to draw blood.

Since they'd done the auction early - Beans had been given a false tip about someone wanting to bid on the painting who was about to leave - Rich had to remind Beans that I got a song. I tried to call "Corners," which Beans refused - he doesn't remember enough of the lyrics, and Jimmy doesn't know the song at all. (I still think the rest of the band could get him through faking it; it's not that hard a song.) I then looked behind him and said, "Well, my next choice'll kill Wiley." Beans started to ask me what my third choice was, but Wiley, being the absolute trouper he is, picked up his sticks and started "Bowl-O-Rama Thunder" without a second glance. :-) (Honestly, I'd have been happy with my third choice, which would have been "Thunder Children," but the only reason that'd have been any easier on the drummer is that it's shorter.) After that, they did a snippet of "Soft Thud of Men," which we haven't heard in ages, followed by "Burds on the Bus" to close the show.

Not their best show, but a good way to musically close the year.
