1) Um, not that I remember the man personally, but my understanding is that LBJ mocking someone 'gently' is rather like smashing an egg with a sledgehammer 'gently'.
2) So SNL in general and Chevy Chase in particular were just ripping off LBJ the whole time? Man, I'm so disppointed in them. (Then again, one can't expect better of Chevy Chase, I suppose.)
"He didn't have enemies." And he didn't make any, even while trying to put the brakes on Lyndon Johnson's Great Society legislation, although L.B.J. mocked him gently by saying he had evidently played football without a helmet.
