Aaaaaah the kids come back tomorrow and I'm so totally not ready! About two-thirds of my classroom stuff is still on the floor of my study! Fortunately, I did manage to sort out the box that had all of my old Precal and Stats stuff, so that's all in one place (although not in order yet). I also shelved two small boxes of educational books in the study here, so those are out of the way, except for the ones that are going in with me. (I'm going to have to get a second small filing cabinet, or a storage box, or something.)

So I'm in much better shape than I was. But, still, Aaaaaaaaaah!

Calm. Peace. Deep breaths. Five minutes of meditative silence will do wonders for you. (Oddly enough, I learned that from Mrs. Pilkington waaaay back in the year of MCMXCIII...)

Prioritization is also good. What can wait until tomorrow night? You're not going to teach everything the first day.

In a worst-case scenario, cast circle around the whole thing and make a work out of it. (pros: circle itself is calming; you won't want to leave or do something else until you're done. cons: you'll be there a while, and under a [self-imposed] compulsion to finish, too).

Deep breaths - first day is all about establishing boundaries, paperwork, and other non-teaching crap. You'll do fine.

If these weren't IB Diploma kids, I'd agree with you - but I'm going to have one batch for an hour and a half (everybody's gotta eat lunch), and if I don't do some sort of teaching they're going to think I'm (*gulp*) easy.

I'm not too worried about the other five classes, although I'm going to have to figure out what to do with them Tuesday and Wednesday - I have an activity in mind, and I've found half the materials for it so far . . .

Nah, if you teach stuff on the first day they'll probably think you're mean. :-p Not that you shouldn't do it; I'm just saying.

from [livejournal.com profile] awbryan user info:

" Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (http://www.livejournal.com/schools/?ctc=US&sc=MS&cc=Columbus&sid=6408) - Columbus, MS (1990 - 1996)" <-- not a typo.

Believe it or not, I did grow up.

Eventually.

Mostly.

You will do quite fine!

Hi! By now you have had your first day. I am certain it went fine. Them IB kids might begin to suspect you are "easy" but I bet you can fix _that_ impression by Wednesday. Not even the ol' overwhelm them with quantity, but I know you can get 'em with quality. They hate that (and respect it too). :)
