Went to bed astonishingly early (for me) last night, which is why I didn't post anything. Spouse woke me up briefly when he came to bed.
About 2:30, I woke up, looked at the clock, and went "oh, shit, the alarm's not on," having forgotten that today was a Saturday. I managed to wake the Spouse up trying to set the alarm clock and then trying to un-set it again. Being the Spouse, rather than letting me fix it, he insisted on getting up and un-setting it himself.
At about 6, the storm blew through. The thunder woke me up almost immediately, so I was sitting there listening to the rain when the "whomp. WHOMP. CRASH bang tinkle tinkle" occurred and woke up the Spouse, who then proceeded to stand at the window peering through the blinds without his glasses on for several minutes, trying to see what had happened. I couldn't tell (once I finally got my turn) either, except that there had clearly been hail at some point. We both laid back down; it took me another half hour to get back to sleep.
At just before 11, I was awakened by the sound of someone starting a gasoline-powered weed whacker. After trying to sleep through this for about ten minutes, I finally got up and looked. The back driveway behind our apartment is filled with downed branches and the usual yard crew, who are gamely trying to clear them with their usual tools plus a couple of machetes. At this point, the Spouse began snoring, so I gave up on trying to sleep.
There's a downed branch from the willow in the main driveway and a lot of leaves in the front. (I'm a bit surprised - the hackberry in the front has been making creaking-popping noises for a long time, and I've been waiting for it to finally just split down the middle where Rita cracked it.) I guess the lawn crew are going to be here for a while. I know we need the rain, but a nice long soak instead of these serious but brief storms would be nice.
Everyone out there okay? Looking at this thing on the radar, that's a hell of a storm band (and there's a second, less nasty-looking one following it that may miss us to the south).
