Yesterday's in-service was, once again, good but not what I wanted or expected. I was hoping we'd actually work on some vertical teaming stuff, making links and sharing issues from the bottom to the top of the Pre-AP/AP math chain. Instead, we worked on increasing the mathematical and problem-solving competance of the Pre-AP/AP math teaching team. I agree that needs to be done, but (a) it doesn't do much for me - my mathematical competence and self-image is fine, thank you, and (b) if that's the issue, we need to start reaching a lot lower than just the secondary teachers - the intermediate teachers need to be included at a minimum, and I still think we need to go all the way to the bottom and convince the math-phobic teachers in the K and 1st grade classrooms that they can do this stuff. (Oh, and require introductory-level courses in calculus, statistics, and number theory for elementary ed majors.)

PB didn't show up to Movie Night - the poor dear has enough to worry about getting his show prepped for tonight. EW and the Annoying M only showed up for the anime (ep 5 of FLCL and an episode of His and Her Circumstances). However, AH was actually the first to show up. DM had left a message on the machine around 1:30 pm (having forgotten, I think, that I wouldn't be home this week), and neither AH nor I had heard back from him, despite having tried to call him. He finally called back just as we were about to get started, and AH went to fetch him; they thus blessedly missed most of the FLCL. DG arrived during the second anime. I set out the brownies I'd made, which were rapidly devoured (I saw AH scraping the crumbs out of the pan later, which I took as a great compliment).

I almost sank to begging EW not to leave. It's not that I don't like being the only female in a room full of bright boys - that's the problem; I like it quite a lot. It cost me probably a sixth of the rope I have remaining.

The movie for the evening was Punch Drunk Love. I so didn't get this movie. The plot was barely there, none of the characters were either comprehensible or believeable, the lighting quality is just short of hallucinatory, and it seemed deeply misogynistic to me. To add insult to incredulity, the main relationship of the movie is one of the worst double-sub situations I've seen in forever. (Given that DG doesn't think that the female main character actually exists except as a projection of the main male character, I find that doubly bizarre - why would he want someone who can't complement him?) AH and DG think I'm projecting motivations onto the storytelling that aren't there - but if they aren't, what's left?

DM didn't like the movie, either. He jokingly accused me of having spiked the brownies early on. We spent a non-trivial portion of the film looking at each other and whimpering. I think this annoyed DG. Another inch or two of rope.

How deep is the drop at the end?

I'm starting to hate this Saturn Return thing . . .

"A slightly stunned silence greeted the end of this speech, then DB said 'One person can't feel all that at once, they'd explode.'

'Just because you've got the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn't mean we all have,' Omorka said nastily, typing again."
