Aaaand yet another survey
Sep. 11th, 2005 04:27 pmThis one's recursive - it's a survey about LJ. *shrug* I can do recursion . . .
1. Your LiveJournal user name and what it means:
I'm
omorka because it's one of the less-used names of my matron goddess, and etymologically related to the name of hers I inherited as my magickal name. In retrospect, it was awfully arrogant of me to use it unmodified, and if I had it to do over, I think I probably would have called the journal "omorka's_voice" instead. But she doesn't seem to mind, and it's several years' done at this point.
2. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your LiveJournal represent who you actually are?
The friends-locked version is probably about a 9. The public version I'm not sure about - maybe a 7?
3. How much about your life do you post to LJ?
I'd say that at least 90% of the important stuff gets mentioned eventually, but not necessarily in a timely manner.
4. Is there anything you refuse to post about?
"Refuse," no. I post a lot less about my sex life and the issues therewith than I really feel inclined to, because that gets really old really fast. And I can't post some of the more personal issues with my students because of confidentiality, although those often make it in here in dilute form after the crisis is finished.
5. On a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?
Mmm, hard to tell. I swing between thinking my life is far more fascinating than it probably actually is and thinking it's so boring that no one other than me could possibly be interested in it, and my opinion on the LJ follows suit. On average, probably a 3 or so.
6. Has anyone ever joined LJ because of you?
I'm at least partially responsible for both
bibulb and
memeslayer joining, and I think I may have had some small influence on
quantumduck.
7. What proportion of your posts are friends only?
It varies, but something close to 70% - unless there's weirdness with the students, when it gets significantly higher.
8. What are your top five favorite interests on LJ?
Er, mine or others'? If we mean mine, then it's:
chaos
compersion
divination
polytheology
sapiosexuality
9. How often do you post in communities, and did you ever start your own?
Once a month or so, and no.
10. How often do you respond to/comment on other people's journals?
On the grounds that people probably don't want me spamming their journals, I comment on only about half of the things I'd really like to, but that ends up with me commenting on probably four or five posts a day.
11. Do you prefer to write in your journal or read other journals?
This is not an either-or thing for me; my sense of LiveJournal is as a deeply participatory thing that requires both give and take to keep going. Having said that, I read LJ almost every day, while my resolve to make at least one post per day keeps getting slagged by Real Life. And I probably get more real joy out of reading other people's posts than from making my own.
12. Have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument on LJ (or did it to someone else)?
Not on LJ, no. (It's happened on Usenet and in e-lists before.)
13. Have you ever banned someone from your journal?
Only spammers.
14. Who are your four favorite LJ friends and why?
As long as we all understand that this is about whose posting styles and journal writing I like, not about the personalities or people, and restricting this to people who are mutually friended:
bassfingers - I've always liked his writing style, and I think his "speaking voice" comes out exceptionally clearly in his posts.
moontyger - I'm really bad at keeping up with non-LJ, non-Xanga blogs. The Links of the Days are exceptionally helpful for me to keep an eye on what's being written in the parts of the Web I don't normally travel.
brezhnev - Godsdamn, his writing is hysterically funny when he tries. I wish he posted more often, although I understand why he doesn't.
princejvstin - the only one in this list I don't know in RL, it was the writing (and, admittedly, the cute userpic) that attracted me in the first place. Capable of leaping from topic to topic in a single bound and making the transition seem perfectly natural.
Having said that, please understand that if I didn't like your journal, I wouldn't have friended you, and that I eagerly await reading everyone's posts. These just stand out to me at the moment.
16. Why are you most likely to add someone to your friends list?
I add most of the people I know in RL who have LJs as a means of keeping up with them. For people whom I don't already know, the things that attract me are common interests, decent writing, and a sense of who they are as people - either fellow-geekdom or something else that displays their fringeworth.
17. Do you automatically add friends to your journal if they add you first?
Not automatically, no. If it's someone I know in RL, I don't add them if I think they might slip up and make something in one of my work-posts or student-posts public. If it's not someone I know in RL, I'll read their journal for a while first, and then add them if and only if I think it's someone who fits in the categories above. I tend to err on the side on not adding, on the grounds that I don't want to overwhelm my friends page.
18. What is the most likely reason you wouldn't add someone to your friends list?
Atrocious grammar, or nothing worthwhile to say. I'll also admit that I don't usually add people whose political doctrines are completely incompatible with my own, although partial incompatibility can just make for interesting conversation.
19. Is your "significant other" on LJ?
The Spouse is on LJ (the aforementioned
bibulb), yes.
20. Have you ever wanted to meet someone on LJ?
Yes, especially the ones who are RL friends of friends of mine (
ziactrice fell in this category until I finally did get to meet her at ChocDec;
princejvstin still does, through my RL roleplayer Amberite friends) or whom I share "the roof as an introduction" with from MSMS (particularly
colorwhirl and
altamira16).
