So what's your favorite Beatles song?

Why this particular one?

Mine probably doesn't need that much explaining. First, it's George. He really is the best musician out of the four. (I like Paul's voice best, but you can't have everything, and they're all singing harmony on this one, anyway.) Second, the lyrics mean something special, and relevant to me - have since I first heard it. (Probably do to anyone who's ever been poly in a mono world.) It's melodically simple without being simplistic, and it has good chord structure. And finally - jangly guitars. Can't beat it.

Most of my runners-up - "All You Need is Love," "She Said, She Said," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" - are John songs. "Penny Lane" and "Golden Slumbers" are my favorite Paul songs (generally, I like earlier John and later Paul). I think most of the rest of my top ten are all George. Having said that, the best moment in any Beatles song, IMHO, is the final drum fill in "Ticket to Ride," which is pure Ringo.

Hmm. This is a tough question. I could name a dozen songs, too.

But I will go with the song that I identify with more than any other. I think you can guess which one that is.

Nowhere Man.

My songs...

So many, which do I choose? In no particular order:

If I Fell, because it's so far ahead of its time musically. The chord changes caught my ear before I even knew what "chord structure" meant.

When I'm Sixty-Four, because it's sweet.

She's Leaving Home, because it resonates so much with my own life. That line, "She's leaving home after living alone for so many years," still makes me sad.

Octopus's Garden, because it's silly and catchy.

Let It Be, because it has some specific good memories attached to it.

If I had to pick a favorite overall album, it would be Sgt. Pepper, at least partly because so many of the songs from it show up in Yellow Submarine, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.
