So my father called me tonight. When I found out it was him, I was steeled for bad news - usually my mother is the one that calls me, and his sister - my favorite aunt - has had first breast cancer, then lung cancer, for a while now. But no, he just wanted to talk about stuff.

In the process, almost offhandedly, he mentioned that the older of my two younger brothers and his long-term girlfriend have set a date. Imagine my shock; I didn't even know they were engaged yet! I am slightly irritated at [livejournal.com profile] angelprojekt for not saying anything about it in her LJ - doesn't she know I rely on her for news about things like this? (If you're reading this, I'm not really mad, but I am surprised you didn't mention anything.)

So now I have to plan to be home for part of July. O the excitement. But I am happy that my brother has decided to take the plunge; he and she seemed to be a very good match, the couple of times I've been around them together. (Wow, I get a second sister-in-law, too.)

My other sibs seem to be okay, if not necessarily making a steady path through college. Why was it so much easier for me than all of them, I wonder?

(edited because I can't spell, and to note that apparently Vernal Equinox causes people in my LJ circles to post about their families . . .)

A note on language usage: for people in your father's generation, "they've set a date" is often synonymous with "they've become formally engaged". So you might not be as far behind the curve on the news as you thought.

Oh, actually, that was poor wording on my part - what he actually said made it clear that they'd been engaged since Christmas or so, and that they just formally decided on a date relatively recently. Sorry about that.

I was going to say congratulate your brother J for me, but then I thought that was your initial as well and could potentially be any of your siblings' initial as well. So congratulate the appropriate one, and if he doesn't know who I am, nevermind.
