Blew in from the Gulf like a hot, wet kiss

Got extra water. Got extra ice.

Spouse has his batteries charged.

I'm going to make a big jar of sun tea so we don't have to open the fridge. Got lots of canned food and breakfast bars, ditto.

The stove is gas, and we have a camp stove and a grill if that becomes unsafe.

We're pretty much ready, I think. Barring Edouard pulling an Allison and camping out over us for days, I think we'll be fine. I'll try and update frequently tomorrow (well, later today, at this point).

The first bands are starting to show up on the Weather Underground radar. Doesn't look too bad so far, knock wood.

Houston Storm Warning

So far, lots of rain , but it's being soaked up or running off fairly quickly - the paved part of our back yard was flooding earlier, but it's okay now, and our street hasn't shown any signs of flooding out. Not much in terms of wind (yet, knock wood). All in all, unless things change drastically, seems like a best-case scenario. (Ia the Ocean-Mother! Io Hurican!)

Yeah, with the rain and all, I decided to make something hearty for lunch. Peg Bracken has a lamb-and-lentil stew that she called "Liberal Pottage," the idea being "diverse elements all stewing together." I'm not fond of wet-cooking lamb, so I fussed with it until it was unrecognizable and in fact resembles my recipe for Hoppin' John more than the original. It's still a lentil stew, though.
