So we went to the Jonathan Coulton/Paul & Storm show this evening. It's the first time I've been to the (relatively new) Houston location of the House of Blues, and I kind of liked it - it's not Warehouse Live, but it's an okay space and the sound system was nice.

I have to admit, much as I like JoCo and his music, I was more than half there for Paul & Storm. I really ought to find them more annoying than I do, considering that they've never seen a cheap sexual innuendo that they didn't like, but they're so much fun to sing along with! (And they're totally cute. I tried to apply for a groupie position after the show, but after considering it, they decided they didn't have enough room on the bus.)

I figured, since they were opening, that they'd do "Opening Band," and I came prepared - on the lines "And sad to say, as of today,/No panties have been thrown," I went up to the front and tossed a pair of bright fuchsia lace undies onto the stage. I then turned around to get back to my seat and scuttled back, not wanting to block anyone's view. I figured it might be worth a joke in the stage banter after the song. Unfortunately, I missed their expressions doing that, but they stopped the song. By the time I got turned back, they were playing tug-of-war with the underwear! (Paul won. He then hung the undergarment off of his mic stand for the rest of the show.) They then backed up a couple of lines and went back into the song, changing the lyric to "As of today,/One panty has been thrown." I'm still giggling. :-D

Other show highlights:

- P&S have a JoCo style parody called "Live" that's absolutely fabulous. They've also got a Gregorian chant about fighting nuns.

- Coulton broke a guitar string on the first song. Fortunately, Storm was there to loan him his guitar and hustle the other one off stage to replace the string.

- "I Crush Everything" and "First of May" were both gorgeous, as always.

- Coulton did several covers, including a solo acoustic version of Billy Joel's "Pressure" that was fabulous, and a sweet version of TMBG's "Birdhouse in your Soul" with Paul & Storm. There was also a stump-the-band-esque bit with the three of them at the end of "Soft Rocked By Me" that was pretty awesome.

- We got RickRolled in the middle of one song.

- It's hard to sing "Still Alive" in JoCo's key.

- On the last chorus of "Re: Your Brains," I looked up and saw half of the Lager Rhythms leading the balcony in doing the Thriller. I just about fell out of my chair laughing.
