In my head, the Doctor doesn't have a bloody clue what age he is (how could he, unless he's keeping count on a big chart somewhere) and only picks on 900 cos it sounds good.

Not exactly the Word of God, but close enough for rock 'n' roll. Certainly explains how Nine claims he's younger than Seven said he was - he's just completely lost track. I rather suspect the Doctor's hit his Big Millennium and is too vain to admit it, now. ;-)
