In particular, [livejournal.com profile] bassfingers still has far more listed interests than I do. But I added a couple more.

I went ahead and added "mythology." I still feel like I should add a modifier, like "pantheonic mythology" or "comparative cultural mythology," or even "mythological cosmology," but no point in being overly complicated, I guess. Precision isn't that important in an interest list, and I'm pretty specific about many things. I also broke down and added "sex" for the same reason.

I realized that I had "naming" listed, but not "names". I fixed that.

I added another variation on "role-playing games", although there are still people on my friends list that I don't show as having the interest in common despite my knowing they have it listed.

Since I was adding "mythology", I also added "mythos" and "logos". Since I was adding "sex," I also added "eros". Nothing like throwing a little Greek around for clarity, ne?

If I already have "education" listed, is it sufficiently different to justify adding "schools", too?

I also removed one; I figured I didn't need to have "chant" listed if I also had "chanting" and "chants".

But that changes the answers...

Yeah, I may have gone a bit overboard, but really, Interets like "music" and "books" are kinda useless. There are 748975 people or communities that list music as an interest... I'm sure that means I have something in common with all of them, but it's not enough of a distinction for me to waste one of the 150 Interest slots on it...

On the one hand, I'm sure that over time any given LJer's interest list, including mine, will evolve.

On the other, I'll admit that I think of it less as a way of finding people with common interests as a way of determining what someone whose journal I'm thinking of reading is like. So if I left out "reading," for example, even though I'm sure it's a very common interest, I'd be omitting something important about myself for someone who was looking over my userinfo trying to decide if I was worth reading or not.

Difference in philosophy, I think . . .

Indeed. But by listing specific authors who's work I like, rather than lumping in all the authors I don't like or haven't read, it seems somehow more significant.

I agree with this; it's pretty much the way I do my interests list, except that mine is still pretty thin by comparison to most. OTOH, that's good if I'm quickly scanning someone else's HUGE interests list -- the ones we have in common will pop out at me.
