Talking in Circles

Arrrgh . . .

We're talking around something, in circles of varying radii.

And I don't exactly know what it is, although I could make some guesses as to what the general topic might be.

And the Spouse has no clue, so he keeps butting in with his lighthearted stuff. Whatever this might be, it isn't lighthearted.

This is selfish of me, but I don't want to head into this next week with this whatever-we're-not-quite-talking-about hanging over me. I need to get it at least out in the open, even if we don't finish it.

The way you write this, it almost sounds like you are talking in circles with an unknown thrid party, and the Spouse is getting in the way. Either you are keeping another conversant's ID secret, or your fella is in a special kind of dissociative uber-avoidance.
