Resurfacing After the Harvest
May. 31st, 2004 10:47 pmGraduation went very well, although the guy sitting in front of me kept getting up to congratulate his students (mildly annoying) and pecking his female students on the cheek (sightly disturbing). The crowd was rowdier than the graduates, as usual - and some moron who probably never graduated hirself brought an airhorn. The valedictorian, who was also my Mu Alpha Theta president these past two years, delivered one of the better valedictory addresses I've ever heard. Played to his audience, but you expect that, ne? He also had some mike problems - it didn't quite come up high enough for him, which surprised me, since he's only middling tall (maybe just barely six feet?). So he shouted through the whole thing. Even so, it was pretty effective, and reasonably inspiring - at the least, he knew who to quote from. I see why he scores so well in speech and debate events. I also see why he figured he could convince me of pretty much anything - I suspect most people do fall for him, most of the time.
I am going to miss these kids hugely (although not as much as I'm going to miss next year's crop!). I took about twenty pictures, which didn't come anywhere close to getting everyone. We'll see how they turn out, I guess. He Who Ain't Got No Feet gave me a couple of huge bear hugs - once right after crossing the stage (I was so mad, they put the ramp on the wrong side!), and once after the recessional. During one of these, he managed to run over my feet. :( Ah, well. My kid whose mom threatened to strand him in Nigeria with his grandparents made it, and I told him that when I first taught him in Geometry, I wasn't sure he would. He's college-bound, to someplace in Minnesota! My French Horn Kid is going to one of the UH campuses - I'm trying to get him to go to main campus, but he's leaning towards Downtown, since he thinks he's going to transfer after two years anyway and it's cheaper.
Ah, at least I have one more year with Hyper, Third, Aggie, ADHD, and my new crop of Mu Alpha Theta officers. Third and Hyper are even taking Stats next year, along with a few others.

In non-school related stuff, we had dinner with
memeslayer and his friend MG last night. It was Memeslayer's birthday. Now, I know a number of people in our social group are not into the whole birthday thing, but solar returns are a big deal for me, and so I make a fairly big deal about other people's. I didn't get a chance to bake him a cake, but I picked up the ingredients for a cheesecake, which I will try and put together tomorrow.
While grocery shopping, I got the ingredients for bruschetta, but I ended up using the tomatoes, garlic, and basil on pasta with Parmesan for lunch today. I'll probably just serve the mozzarella straight on Thursday. I'm so happy I finally have time to cook again! Anyone have any good crockery-cooker recipes? I'm trying to avoid heating up the apartment too much . . .
