Better Than Before
Jul. 24th, 2001 03:30 amI ended up making cheese-broccoli soup today for dinner, since we're out of too much stuff to do much of anything else. It's the only thing I ever make with Velveeta in it. I wish I could figure out how to make it without it, but it's enough of a bonus being able to have the stuff without going to the Too Much MSG restaurants that serve it, I'll live with the Velveeta.
The new amp did in fact some in. The Spouse has it working with all five speakers, but for some reason we're only getting sound from the VCR, no picture. The DVD player works just fine, however.
PB and DG showed up as scheduled. We watched _ID4_ to try out the sound system, which worked nicely. Since we have the DVD version, we watched the longer cut. I think we all agreed that none of the scenes that were cut should have been, with one possible exception (more of the Jewish Dad being stunned in the Oval Office). PB and DG successfully stopped the Spouse from also playing the original end-fight with the biplane, which is on the DVD. We also discussed the conventions of who dies in the movie - the token gay dies, of course, as does one of the strippers. But it's the cocky white pilot who bites it instead of the cocky black pilot, and it's the good white woman (the First Lady) who dies in the place of the black stripper. So at least some of the conventions got broken, and I'm willing to take the conscious attempt at non-racism and non-anti-Semitism as evidence of good intentions even with the sexist and homophobic remnants.
We also watched _Celluloid Closet_ again. Having recently re-read the book, I was surprised at how upbeat the ending was; the ending of the book is kind of a downer. I was also thrilled to see Susie Bright; I hadn't realized she's a size-large lady, too. I'd like to show that second shot from _Boys In The Band_ to the ex-gay movement gurus. DG hadn't ever seen it, and seemed to find the film interesting, at least; I think PB wasn't quite in the mood for it. I'm going to need to watch it with the commentary track on sometime soon.
We didn't get to watch any anime. Both PB and DG left pretty soon after the second film (although I don't blame them; they've both got work tomorrow, although not particularly early). I already miss JG and AK and the in-depth conversations. Ah, well.
