Inara squinted up at the flickering light in the windows. "Are you sure this is going to work?"
"Not one hundred percent," Kaylee admitted as she gently packed the loose dirt on top of the last bundle, "but you nixed my best idea."
"I appreciate your faith in my talents," Inara protested, "but I doubt my doing a fan dance and striptease out here would lure all the guards from the building."
Kaylee grinned back, brushing a bit of dust from her cheek. "Well, your record for rescuin' the captain with explody thingys is pretty good so far. And even if this doesn't take out the whole wall, maybe it'll shake River out of her scare'n she'll just take care of all the deputies for us." She wound the last of the tape around a pair of wires. "You ready to blow the joint?"
Billy squinted, then broke into a broad grin. "You miniaturized a laser disc! That's great!"
"It's a little bit more than that," Buckaroo said calmly. "They're also usable as a direct writable digital storage medium, like a floppy disc." He paused and frowned. "They're not rewritable, yet, although I'm working on it."
Penny plucked the silver disc from under the microscope and slid it into the new slot on the computer chassis. "So," she asked, "What's on this one?"
"You might not -" Buckaroo was interrupted by the slideshow of images on the screen. He turned away, his cheeks reddening just slightly.
Reno whistled. "Nice," he added, glancing sidelong at Penny. "You make the negligee yourself? I haven't seen, uh, crochet work like that in a long time."
Penny wheeled on one heel and marched out of the lab, head held high. New Jersey jumped to hold the door for her, then turned back to Buckaroo, shaking his head slowly. "I guess it's true what they say, about the first use for any new information technology, huh."
