This one for no real reason, except that I think I understand it for the first time:

"Got something to say - It's better to burn out than fade away" . . .

Arrgh . . . I need my resident Leo to bounce stuff off, and he's Otherwise Occupied, as he has been since August . . . I may have to make do with a Sag and an Aries by turns . . .

Anyone know if [livejournal.com profile] fyredrago and [livejournal.com profile] phoenixstarfire are taking classes this summer?

Anyone know whether one has to be licensed to drive a scooter, and if so, how one obtains the license without acquiring the scooter first?

I seem to recall that you need a Class B (motorbike) license to operate a motor scooter in Texas. A regular car license will work too, but that probably doesn't apply to you, eh?

There are places where you can take classes, but they are generally motorcycle oriented, although they do provide the motorcycle to learn on. Might be a bit expensive though.

The simple thing to do night be to practice to drive a car, take that test with a borrowed car, and then go buy a scooter. It can't hurt to be legally able to drive a car, even if you don't want to take on that responsibility. As you may know, Rice Stadium has lots of great space to safely learn to drive anything. I put my parents' Toyota into a controlled spin in that lot (I needed to learn the operating tolerances of the thing before I felt safe driving it on streets).

Good luck, I wish I could safely drive a scooter in LALA. If you get one I'll be jealous as heck. You'll give me rides, right?

The transportation code is here: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/tntoc.html

Chapter 521 governs licenses. Chapter 551 governs scooters and such. Unfortunately, I can't figure out between the two at what point a license is required.

Yes, you need a liscense to "legally" drive a scooter. You get one by taking a motorcycle class from DPS. You do not have to have a scooter, moped, or motorcycle beforehand. :)

I'm taking a mishmash of short courses over summer. Most of them are at Rice, but I'll probably be on campus at UH a few times. Not sure when, yet, though. I was wondering if I might manage to run into y'all . . .

Your memories of Stadium Lot are different from mine - it's usually been about half-full since I've known it, and now that all the parking on the front of campus is gated and paid, it's worse. At any rate, if I couldn't successfully pass the driver's test in a small town in Mississippi, there's no way I'd have a prayer of passing it here in Houston. :(

I haven't actually decided to get the scooter yet, but it seems like one of the best solutions to my transportation issues . . . having decided the logistics of a bike weren't going to work out.

You prolly will seeing as we'll be up there for our classes & since we don't have a car, we'll be up there all day as usual. (unless we can locate a job nearby to UH)
