Movie Night, Part 347

moontyger and wileras over for dinner last night. Unfortunately, the turkey was still too pink in the middle, so I had to carve carefully - I hope he doesn't decide I'm a bad cook!
(Edited to add: Oh, and I made the marbled chocolate-vanilla pound cake with the fudge drizzle icing. The one thatmemeslayer taunted DM over last summer. That recipe is such a pain without a stand mixer, and almost trivial with one - it's one of the few recipies where it really makes a big difference (the other one I can think of is the chocolate mousse pie).)
Movie Night was the two of them, plus PB. EW, Annoying M, and DG (and, of course, me and the Spouse). We watched Magnolia (apologies to Moontyger - I didn't realize it was that long!), mostly on DG's recommendation - he's a big P.T. Anderson fan. I enjoyed it - it's one of those movies where part of watching it is figuring out how all these people are connected (although it's not actually a puzzle, the way Playing By Heart is). It also has an incredible cast. I tend to forget that Tom Cruise can actually act, when he's directed well, but he was fantastic in this (I really should have learned from Interview - he was fabulous in that, as well, even if I didn't care much for the story). Of course, being a P.T. Anderson, it had William H. Macy, a great character actor and ex-Hey-It's-that-Guy!, and Philip Seymour Huffman, who was (for me) the one redeeming thing about Big Lebowski.
And I can forgive the not being quite a puzzle in favor of the Big Twist in this one . . . . :)
All in all, a good movie.
DM called earlier to tell the Spouse something about a video game, and told him to have me call him back later (I was still asleep at the time). I finally got back in touch with him at around 3. Apparently one of the Session players was killed in a car wreck on Padraig's day. :( I told him he'd missed a really good Movie Night, and he made vague noncommittal noises about possibly coming to the next one. I was sort of hoping I might actually get some hang-out time with him, but it looks like that's not going to happen anytime soon. *sigh*
