The latest Quicktime update seems to have killed Civ IV on my machine. :-( Opening it causes the icon to appear in the dock, bounce once, and then disappear again, with no explanation whatsoever.

I realize the groups of "Mac people" and "video gamers" on my flist don't overlap very much, but is anyone else having this problem? Any idea what to do about it? I already snagged the latest update from Aspyr and ran it (successfully) - it didn't help. (I'm running 10.4.11, if that makes a difference to anyone.)

Edit: Nevermind. Aspyr did have a fix; it just wasn't where I was looking for it, and didn't come up up in the first two Google searches. Third time's the charm, I guess.

Quicktime 7.6 seems to kill several Aspyr media games. This happens from time to time, and you can probably downgrade Quicktime back to 7.5.5 until the game co. releases a fix for this.

I've been curious about the Civilization games. Are thay any good? How addictive are they?

You could try going to the moment before the update in TIme Machine.

I've tried installing an older Quicktime install package (I keep the old installer files, and I think the system keeps copies.) to address this issue when updates break Adobe Pro Applications.

I know lots of people also use Pacifist to do spot replacement of certain files on their system.

Apple basically advises an 'Archive and Install' action. Glad you don't have to try any of those.

In regards to the Time Machine idea, remember that she's still running Tiger.

it DOES keep the old installers - would you be able to install the old software over the newer? I thought installer.app checked for versioning. (If not, thank heavens.)

Omorka loves them (they've got all the resource management without the realtime combat), but I'm not sure what would run on the G4. i know that some older editions DID run on the G4.

Looks like it was Civ III - that ran on a ... (checks old eBay records) ... 700mhz gooseneck iMac, so a G4 tower shouldn't have any problems with it. The main issue I'd see is FINDING a copy - check eBay and I'd bet one would turn up, though.

(This is all based on what I've seen of her stuff, mind - those things require way more of an attention span than I've got...)

Like the Spouse said, Civ III should run with no problems. Civ IV is probably a little heavy for it.

I enjoy them a lot, but then I like resource management and I suck at non-turn-based combat. My idea of a perfect game was Masters of Orion II.
