And so, the time has come for me to face the fact that my toenails really are that discolored and I need to do something about it. Unfortunately for my persona as a mild-mannered educator, I cannot abide painting my nails any shade of pink, red, or the other standard nail polish shades. The last time I did it, I used a pearlescent sage green polish; I still have some of that, and I impulse-bought a shiny metallic bright purple the other day. I can get some other similarly interesting shades this weekend, if I really want.

I think with your coloring you should go with the dark purple, do it before open house and if you have some nice comfy open toed shoes, then wear them! I doubt that purple toes will really get that much attention from the parents.

Okay, for once Lollee and I aren't sharing a brain. :-)

I think that whatever color you pick, it should be fairly light and preferably pearlescent; I'd be really tempted to go with silver, pale shimmery gold, or a strongly-iridescent white. I don't know why this strikes me as less likely to freak the mundanes than a darker color, but it does.

Well, of the choices listed, I went with dark purple as being the least "freak the mundanes" option. She could just wear a pair of loafers and the whole point would be moot. I just sort of liked the idea of gently making the point "I'm not like the math teachers YOU had in high school!" to the parental units.

Teaching has (further) warped my brain.

I think that since you made a post about this, you are feeling like you need to paint them. It matters not a whit if someone can see them or not - you will feel better about yourself if they are painted, I'm guessing.

For me, RED is the way to go, the only way to fly! But for you, I'm thinking that dark purple sounds awfully nice...you will know, even if no one else does, that your toenails are gorgeous.

They won't look like you did them yourself, if that is really a worry, after a bath. The excess comes right off. Pedicures are nice and indulgent, and I recommend them for a pamper, but certainly not necessary! Use some nice cream, make them all soft, and paint away. And enjoy knowing you did it just for you!

I'm rather fond of blue. Paint your toes for yourself. If parents notice, let them see that they are not dealing with a member of the herd.

I honestly don't think of unusually-colored nail polish as being all that "odd" anymore, personally. I've gone to work (as a university librarian) with my fingernails painted metallic shades of blue in the past. I also have a good friend in Austin who formerly taught 9th grade IPC who used to dye brightly colored streaks in her hair and apparently never got any flack about it.

I'd avoid black, but otherwise, go with what you like. I picked dark purple in your poll simply because that's the color most appealing to me.
