And a bit of scribblage
Jun. 23rd, 2008 08:58 pmThe thing behind the cut is *not* a villanelle. The rhyme scheme is wrong. In fact, the rhyme scheme is mostly missing altogether. It does, however, borrow the repeated-line structure and stanzas of a villanelle, so it's not technically free verse, either.

Words fall from pages, a spill of light
And dark shapes gliding across a surface
Where scattered meanings set the world aright.
An old story sings of shapes and shadows
Creeping across moors and dreams alike -
Words fall from pages, a spill of light.
The potter shapes the clay to suit a purpose,
Form and function twinned, or even one,
Where scattered meanings set the world aright.
The storyteller sings to sticky children,
Weaving a tale of old and well-used threads.
Words fall from pages, a spill of light.
Color and form spin across canvas, mobile,
Glint from the edges of glazed sculpture
Where scattered meanings set the world aright.
Here they meet, this dance and pressured plight
Of thing-making and meaning-making, all at once.
Words fall from pages, a spill of light
Where scattered meanings set the world aright.
