Saw Iron Man yesterday, as a matinee. Very solid movie. While there were a couple of roles for which I'd have liked to see alternative casting, the cast they had turned in a fabulous job, and the direction was, while a bit over-the-top, appropriate for a comic-book movie. It was very respectful of the established canon without treating it as sacred writ. Downey nailed Tony Stark, body language, self-doubts, and all. (Character stats: INT 17, CHA 17, WIS 5. Interesting choice for a dump stat, there, Tony.) The hints that were left for folks who knew the comic books were delicious. The dialogue popped even when the science was sucking. And the film has the Best. Stinger. Ever!

I wasn't familiar with Iron Monger as a character, so Jeff Bridges' turn as a four-color mythology villain was pretty fresh for me. I enjoyed it immensely. Some of the "intellectual property" issues the film raises casually are a bit disturbing, but since in the context of the film they're largely framed as anti-corporate rather than anti-copyleft, I was willing to ignore them for the sake of enjoying the film. The idea that the government agent who is initially framed as an obstructionist bureaucrat ends up bring part of the solution, while the corporate overlord with no higher motive than profit is the bad guy, struck me an an interesting twist after so many years of "government is the problem" films.

I'm looking forward to the Avengers film. Getting there will be fun, although there's certainly lots of possibility for suckage there, as well.
