Yeah, I know, but Acrobat insists it's an unknown file type for some reason. And now I'm at work, where I can't update software even if I want to.

Worked for me. Maybe your work IT department is filtering it? Try saving it to disk as *.txt and reading it with notepad. You might be getting a warning from the IT filters that the file was not permitted, or something of that nature.
