Darn Good Show
Sep. 10th, 2006 08:28 pmWent to the Beans show last night, despite not really feeling that up to it. I'm glad I went, I think - a lot of stuff happened that I really enjoyed - but I didn't dance nearly as much as I usually do. As the Spouse mentioned, the band was not as together as sometimes - there were several trainwrecks, usually due to Beans not being in the same place as the rest of the band. (Wiley later said that it took him all of first set to get into the swing of things, although it wasn't usually mistakes on his end that I was picking up.)
A few highlights:
- We got a copy of the Beans Unplugged show from KPFT on CD; they had it done up with cover art and a silkscreen on the disc and everything. I shall have to rip this soon.
- Beans is in the middle of Dr. Oblongatta's tale of the Dark guitar and mentions the Formica Room at the Alamo Motel.
bassfingers leans up behind me and stage-whispers "There is No Sex in the Formica Room!"
- After Waldo Bob Frost has mentioned the lions yawning in the zoo in Hermann Park, the third reference to them so far this show (Beans must be feeling nostalgic), I turn back to Bassfingers and ask "So, if you happened to be walking aimlessly through Hermann Park at night, would you be Wandering Where the Lions Are?"
- Sue-bob played about sixteen bars of the Ode to Joy on the theramin.
- As Beans and Rich are bickering about the script, Jimb pulls out a yo-yo and proceeds to play with it, at one point stealing the scene from them by getting the string caught on his microphone cord and recovering without having to re-wind the string by hand.
- The painting went for $280.
The belly dancers were all having a belly-off somewhere else in Houston, so most of them arrived late or not at all. This didn't actually upset me very much. The bar played some Spoonfed Tribe, which I appreciated (and it reminded me that I need to pick up a few of their albums).
