Oh, this is better than the original! Partly because it has, like, real instruments. My only complaint is that the chorus is done a bit too straight.

I have a rather idiosyncratic reading of this song, too. Partly this is because I first heard it when I was way too young to get it on any level at all, probably, but I would like to think Porcaro and Bettis are good enough writers to have made it a bit ambiguous deliberately. At any rate, I read this as a love song to the city itself. I may have to swap the gender if I'm going to add it to my karaoke "repertoire", not because I'm the opposite gender from the original singer, but because I think Houston is a different gender from New York.

(I also picked up a bad dance remix of the song. I don't know why I find collecting bad dance remixes of '80s songs so amusing. If it weren't a completely harmless hobby, I'd worry about myself.)
