omorka: (Broccoli Fractal)
So after camping this last weekend, I decided to haul out the grill for its inaugural session of the year this afternoon. The menu was:

  • Two half-chickens, rubbed all over with cajun seasoning and basted with olive oil
  • Three summer squash, split lengthwise, brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkled with fresh-ground pepper
  • Four ears of bicolor sweet corn, silk removed, husks rewrapped and soaked in cold water

  • It was a perfect day for grilling - warm and sunny when I started the coals, the sun just setting with a cool breeze when the chicken was ready. The corn was not as sweet as I could have wished, but the squash came out beautifully and the chicken was done but moist all the way through with a crispy skin. I only wish Middle Market had had some fat asparagus to grill along with the squash; I'm always too nervous to grill the tiny little spears for fear of burning them.

I'll admit, part of it was just for the smell. I've been missing campfires and the smell of grilling in the evenings. But it was all quite tasty, if I do say so myself.
