I do appreciate the willingness of Richard Mueller, JMS, and the other writers for RGB to incorporate plots from both popular science fiction and horror on the one hand and actual mythology on the other. Having said that, I do wish they'd do their homework adequately. Set 3 Disc 1 Ep 6, "I Am the City," uses the battle between Marduk and Tiamat as its set-up, which is fine; it follows the standard mythology in which Tiamat is the villain, which irritates me no end but I can't really expect a . . . a . . . damn, I hate to go weaboo here but "boys' " doesn't really have the correct connotation, so a shonen series to go for the subversion of the myth. I could handle that, in a D&D sort of way.

But Mueller got Tiamat's sex wrong. Really, now, that's just clumsy. Given that they got part of the undertone correct - Marduk takes refuge in the most highly populated part of the city, while Tiamat makes her appearance in Central Park, the closest approximation to a wild space available - I'm rather bitter that they screwed that up.

I also can't find a listing for who did Tiamat's voice on the episode. If it was Welker, then I'm going to be doubly disappointed, because he'd done that character before, and the D&D cartoon got her gender right. It seems like the sort of minor edit they could have made from the recording booth. (And yes, I just checked; the D&D cartoons predate the RGB ones.)

[Damn, I forgot to post this before we left for the party. Lemme see if I can backdate it to when I actually wrote it.]

[Nope. Ah, well, I'll post it and then fix it from the web interface.]

[There, fixed.]
