omorka: (Doctor #5)
[personal profile] omorka
Since I've been reading a fair bit of multi-Doctor fic, and since [livejournal.com profile] scarfman had posted a question about the relative heights of Tennant and Davison, here's what Teh Intarwebs has to say about the Doctor's heights:

One - William Hartnell - There don't seem to be any Google-able sites that know. An offhand comparison on celebheights.com suggests taller than average, but less than 6'1", which would put him around 5'11"-6'. By the time he plays the Doctor, he's probably shrunk a bit, too.

Two - Patrick Troughton - no firm data, but a couple of fan-sites suggest somewhere in the vicinity of 5'8". (IMDB lists his sons, David and Michael Troughton, as both 5'11", so despite the fan tendency to draw him even shorter, within the 2.5" standard deviation of average is probably right.)

Three - Jon Pertwee - 6'3" (both IMDB and celebheights.com), and he looked every inch of it.

Four - Tom Baker - 6'3" (both IMDB and celebheights.com). A couple of places suggest he's shrunk a bit now, so ficcers who age an incarnation of the Doctor when he meets a later incarnation (per "Time Crash") could make him a bit shorter. On the other hand, a few fansites recounting personal meetings when he was playing the Doctor and shortly afterwards mention that his immense force of personality made him appear even taller!

Five - Peter Davison - 6'1" (IMDB), or 6' 1/4" (celebheights.com). The first appears to be from ACG&S publicity; the second may be a more recent figure. Or they could just be shod/barefoot measurements.

Six - Colin Baker - 6'0" (all sources). I had thought he was the same height as Davison (which would support the shorter number for him), but that might just be the Amazing Technicolor Nightmarecoat making him look bigger.

Seven - Sylvester McCoy - 5'6" (all sources). The shortest Doctor. I wonder how much of the difference in the writing between some of the earlier Doctors and him has to do with Seven being spiritually but not physically imposing?

Eight - Paul McGann - 5'8" (IMDB and celebheights.com) or 5'9" (actor quotes). Spoils my argument that height of the regeneration has something to do with the trauma of the death. Which is just as well, because that suggests that being force-regenerated by the Time Lords is exactly as traumatic as falling off a radio tower.

Nine - Christopher Eccleston - 6' 1 1/2" (IMDB), or just over 6' (celebheights.com). There are several comments on the celebheights page from people who have met him who are arguing for the former measurement, and he's visibly taller than Tennant, so I think I believe IMDB on this one.

Ten - David Tennant - 6'1" (all sources), although there seems to be some argument about this, with several people claiming that he's between 6' and 6'1" and one person on celebheights.com arguing for something closer to 6' 1 1/2" or even 6'2". Whether you count the hair probably has something to do with it. May also have some of the 'force of personality' effect mentioned earlier, if he's as manic in real life as he is in interviews.

Oh, just for comparison:

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart - Nicholas Courtney - 6'1"

Captain Jack Harkness - John Barrowman - 6' even

I can't find Frazier Hines, unfortunately.

So now we all know whether a particular Doctor has to reach up or down to slap his other self on the back. Or whatever else you have him doing. :-)
