Chess (and Other Strategy Games)

Got my butt kicked thoroughly at four-way chess today - Third and Hyper decided that Debate and I would play against them. Debate's play style (very aggressive, lots of piece-for-piece exchanges) and mine (total defensive turtle fortress) don't mesh well. Third and Hyper pinned me with a double-queen attack. Ah, well. More reason for me to take other games to the ChaOS-G meetings.

How does this four-way chess work?

Another interesting variant of four-player chess is Mad Mate (also known by other names.) Two separate games with partners sitting next to each other playing opposite colors. Whenever you take a piece in your game, you give it to your partner. Your partner can then place the piece on the board instead of making a move. The square you place on must be unoccupied, and no pawns placed on the eighth rank. Promoted pawns keep their promotion when taken. Oh, and you have to use clocks and set them for blitz (5 minutes per side) or it's not frenetic enough. If my taste was anything approaching normal, kids love this one.

I think I might still have some of the boards I drew up for 4D Tic-Tac-Toe. "4D" is really a bit of a misnomer, but I thought of it as Qubic being played on an unfolded tesseract. If you're familiar with the standard Qubic board, think about 4 of them next to each other; any 4 levels in a straight line constitute a board; you play on all 10 possible boards simultaneously; 4 in a row on any board wins.
