We Have an AUP For a Reason, People

omorkaIt it petty of me to get upset when people print out all of their e-mail?
I mean, all of their personal e-mail?
On the work printer?
Which just got its toner cartridge changed, finally?
When I'm actually trying to print out work-related stuff?
And it's not only personal e-mail, it's really stuff that's not appropriate for the workplace?
*sigh*
I don't mean to be such a whiner, but really - personal e-mail goes to your home e-mail address, professional e-mail goes to your work e-dress. If you need to take something that accidentally went to your work e-mail home, you forward it to your home address. If you don't have a home address, AOL and Hotmail are cheap. You don't print it out on the work printer and then leave it there for the next six people to accidentally read through as they're trying to find the quiz they just printed out and need to get run off.
In particular, 7-page shaggy-dog sob stories about poverty-striken 10-year-olds who are saved from a life of drug-dealing by the magic of John 3:16 and 4-page ads for vintage motorcycles (two different people, although it would make a better story if they were the same one, wouldn't it?) should not be left on the work printer for me to have to thumb through to find my quiz. It's just that much more irksome that if I had the bad taste to print off even a one-page religious tract of my own, it'd rattle the school gossip lines in no time. (Fortunately, they can't fire me for my religion anymore, and they obviously don't fire people for misuse of the printer.)

One of theSpEd Spuds disabled kids next door had major-league freakouts both yesterday and today. He likes to kick things, and when he gets really worked up, he likes running into things with his head. Full speed. Like, say, the wall between my classrom and his. *Ai.* This led to a number of my kids wondering out loud what the Hel was wrong with this kid, and one person wondering why all the AP and Pre-AP classes are in the boonies of the school. (Think about it, Tennis Kid. How best to make it clear what freaks we thinking people are? Both ends of the bell curve get exiled to the same parts of the school.)
DN flaked on our Cognitive Coaching meeting today; given that I dramatically flaked the last one, I'm not even going to gripe (just worry whether we're actually going to get our final conferences in on time). I am finding myself hoping that he lets me know the next time he plays a show, and not just because I want to know what DM would think of his stuff. Tomorrow's an A-day. Somehow those end up being more stressful, even though most of the kids I really like are A-day kids, too. Maybe that's why it's stressful. Maintaining the fiction of being an authority figure is getting more and more difficult as we approach the end of the year. In Precal, especially, I want to throw up my hands and just start doing fun math instead of covering the state curriculum. I can't do that, of course; if nothing else, we need to cover polar, parametrics, and limits to get them ready to start calculus. (If it had been up to me, I wouldn't have spent four weeks reviewing systems and exponentials, since I knew we covered that last year, but of course it's not up to me.) At least in Stats, I have the luxury of choosing to do that if I wish after the AP test has passed.

In the end, I let nothing go . . . a hard way to live, my friend. But better, I think, than the people who will arrive at their graveside having held on to nothing. The streamers of my memeweaving may catch in the wind and drag behind, but they will also catch me when I fall . . .
