Nooo, Joss killed Coulson! You bastard!
There is a consistent sense of place in the big swooping fight-scene shots that most action directors fail to maintain. (Peter Jackson is the only other one I can think of who consistently gets it right.)
I was sort of expecting to come out of this shipping Cap/Iron Man. I was not expecting the big chemistry to be between Banner and Stark. Holy HoYay. And then Joss lampshades it!
Steve/Tony/Bruce is the new McCoy/Kirk/Spock.
The moment when Steve and Tony are America, GI Generation version, and America, GenX version, is almost worth the price of a ticket all by itself.
Hiddleston is all kinds of wrong hotness. The interrogation scene with Loki and Black Widow is a two-way dubcon mindfuck, and it is smokin'.
Joss actually knows how to handle the fact that two members of the team have neither powers nor any armor better than Kevlar, and still make them useful. Also, did anyone else want to hear Nathan Fillion doing Hawkeye's dialogue?
Note to self: do not monologue at the Hulk.
The movie fails Bechdel on Phase 2 - there are three very important female characters (and a few minor or one-scene ones), but they never have a conversation. However, they are never "just girls," and not only does Whedon make them competent, he gives them some sparkling dialogue. I'm willing to give him a pass on the spirit of the thing, given that the source material probably did worse.
Can we have the Scarlet Witch in the next one as long as we don't say "mutant" or mention Magneto?
