Discussion Question

What will you willingly endure in order to learn something?

What will you willingly endure so that someone else can learn something? Does it matter whether or not you already know whatever it is?

The answer to that one is extremely situational, at least for me. What exactly is the other party to learn? Algebra? A major life lesson? Who is this other party? Are they my family, my friend, or my foe? I could probably expound all day using just the various combinations of the listed options...

I think it varies depending on whether you're talking about a skill (e.g. beekeeping) or a piece of factual information ("who killed my father?"), and of course what specifically it is that you're talking about.

Quite a lot, apparently. I haven't taken a vow of celibacy yet. :-p

What will you willingly endure so that someone else can learn something?

Depends on what will result from them learning it. Generally, less than I would endure for my own sake. But what I usually go through to help other people learn is far too benign to use words like "endure".

Does it matter whether or not you already know whatever it is?

Not particularly, unless I'm interested in learning it too.

No pain no gain is not just a catch phrase as far as I am concerned about my own knowledge.

As for someone else, it depends on who the someone else is, and their relationship to me.

I have kept my mouth shut so that others could learn for themselves what I really wanted to tell them. I cannot think of any more painfull process than seeing loved ones go through pain so that they can gain personal power and understanding. I always wish I could give them the hard earned knowledge I've aquired over the years so it doesn't go to waste. It never seems to work tho.

I consider this to be one of the major failings of the human race in general.
