I forget whether it was Romeo or Juliet who made the comment about "my only love sprung from my only hate," but I now know what they were talking about: IDW will be publishing a Mars Attacks/Real Ghostbusters crossover in January.

I'm not sure if I can accurately describe how conflicted I am. On the one hand, I desperately want to support any return of RGB to the comics medium. On the other hand, I really, really, really despise Mars Attacks on every possible level.

In other news, if you haven't heard the mashup in the music bar for this post, hit it up on YouTube. It's both funny and quite well-put-together. And just in time for Halloween!

The Dark Piggy Saga

The Muppets as X-Men. Holy crap, these are awesome. Especially the last one, which I won't spoil here. (h/t: [livejournal.com profile] calliopes_pen)

Unleashing Campbell on TVTropes, or possibly vice-versa

I posted a version of this comment elsewhere a while ago, but: there have been several people drawing parallels between fandom and folk religion. The existence of the Thor movie - that is, a film based on a comic book based on Norse religion and folklore - has made things interestingly complicated in that department.

In particular, someone was complaining about movie!Loki being a woobie, and I pointed out that it was clearly delibarate - someone (I suspect JMS) wrote him as the biggest Draco In Leather Pants ever - but that, given the source material for the source material, it wasn't necessarily out of character. After all, there are still Lokismen and Lokiswomen among the Asatru, and not all of them are the Nordic equivalent of Discordians; some of them see him as a compelling deity in his own right from the myths, with complex but sympathetic motivations.

Then I pointed out that Loki is, in his shapeshifter aspect, a genderbender god, and there aren't that many of those. (Thor's been known to cross-dress, but that was just that one time. I digress.) In fact, Loki has three children; he is father to two of them and mother to one, and that one is an eight-legged horse.

Or, to put it another way, in the source material to the source material for the movie, both the genderswap fic and the furry mpreg are canon.

My interlocutor was not amused.

Darlin', I believe in love

Just realized - this really ought to be Penny's song in Phonogram.

Hmm. An American version of Lloyd who's into Wang Chung instead of Dexy's? *ponders*

Also, I just submitted a Phonogram prompt to [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. I don't know whether anyone else on the board will know what it is. :-/ And I guess I should start listing it as a fandom. *sigh*

Writer's Block: Heroes and villains

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I don't remember being particularly into any superheroes in early childhood. By my pre-adolescent phase, I was a big fan of Storm - she was emotionally strong, not dependent on a guy for her self-image, and she had a kick-ass power set that related to nature. That she was a goddess didn't hurt, although I didn't admit that until much later.

Hee hee hee, she wrote "ill-fitting armored bras" . . .

Best. Legal Decision. Ever.

Also, I think the judge needs to develop her own comic book; she came up with better stuff there than Image has for years.

It's not an April Fool's gag, it's just a good idea

There are no words for how much I want The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: America 1988 to actually exist. The only way to make it better would have been to include Banzai and/or one of the Misfits of Science.

I may have to write fanfic for this as if it actually were going to see print. 8-/

Your Moment of Commercialized Heartwarming for Today

Okay, so Starbucks, as part of the whole (PRODUCT)RED thing, produced a video of people in a hundred-some-odd countries singing/performing "All You Need Is Love" simultaneously. Yes, it's a commercial endeavor and obviously inspired by the Where The Hell Is Matt? clips, but they ended up with a pretty sweet video anyway.

Video Behind The Cut )

Just the sound editing on that is kind of impressive, honestly - getting those to all fade and segue together into something coherent.

Anyway, I showed you that so I could show you this. :-)

Okay, I'm still not sure what I think of the storyline for the Ghostbusters: Displaced Aggressions comics, but -

No, wait, I do know what I think of the storyline. I think using Gozer as a source of the main conflict is lazy as hell. They've done that story already.

Anyway, after reading #3, I'm almost ready to forgive them for the sake of the art. This Egon's gorgeous.

In other news, I really enjoy music that was originally electronic being played on analog instruments.
