Here's an image of all the races that formally join the New Alliance of Free Stars (or the Empire of [your name here], depending on what you chose to call it) during the game.

There are several other friendly races, and one that isn't exactly friendly, but that you can trade with, that aren't in the picture. Also, the Thraddash - the big rhino things with the cigar - eventually turn against you (you have to steal something from them in order to save the galaxy, and they don't ever forgive you). Sadly, the artist has not done the Hierarchy, or the unallied races.

Don't forget that there's a third option -- the United Federation of Worlds. "Sounds a bit familiar", says Commander Hayes. Heh heh heh.

The Orz don't *have* to turn on you, but they can if you say the wrong things. And it's pretty clear that they don't really care if we live or die in the long run... I don't entirely trust the Arilou, but I'd trust them over the Orz any day.

The Arilou are no more straightforward than the fae ever are, but given a choice between even the Unseelie court and Lovecraftian horrors, which is how the Androsynth seem to have described the Orz, yeah, I gotta go with the little green men.
