I am vaguely contemplating attempting Yuletide this year, after skipping it two years in a row.

Mostly this is because I think Atop the 4th Wall, by itself, is eligible if it isn't crossed over with Channel Awesome more generally.

I don't know when I think I will have the time to write. I'm head writer for Mythos Houston's Owlcon game again this year, and I know how much time and energy that sucks up. Then again, not having to wait on other people is likely to make that less stressful even if it's the same amount of writing time overall, and a chunk of that will fall after the Yuletide deadline anyway.

On the gripping hand, I don't know how many people in my social circle will have major medical crises between now and then, either.

Damnit, I wasn't paying attention and I missed Yuletide nominations again. Ugh, just when MovieBob put out a new Game OverThinker, too.

This is probably a sign that I don't need to try doing Yuletide this year, either. Hopefully various folks will run the usual individual fandom Secret Santa-type exchanges I can jump in on instead.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to do Yuletide this year or not. Should I submit nominations anyway?

Here we go for another year! Yay!

This appears to be this year's Yuletide darling, but with good reason:

Texts From Cephalopods (1547 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Octopus Steals My Video Camera and Swims off with It While It's Recording (Youtube)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Octopus/Squid
Characters: An Octopus, Squid
Summary:

It is a well-established fact in marine biology that the octopus is the drunk texter of the cephalopod family.

It is exactly what it says, and as awesome as it sounds. I'd also argue that it's really original fic rather than fanfic in any meaningful sense, but it is loosely based on YouTube videos, so there you go.

Yuletide!

The last couple of years I'd gotten more than one story, so this year when I saw I'd only gotten my assigned one, I was a wee bit disappointed.

I shouldn't have been.

Fandom: Real Genius (1985)
Rating: Explicit

Relationships: Mitch Taylor/Chris Knight, Mitch Taylor/Jordan
Characters: Mitch Taylor, Chris Knight, Jordan
Summary:

Chris keeps in touch.

So, what can I say?

First, the title. The title. For those who don't recognize it, that's from Thomas Dolby's "Windpower," which is one of my favorite songs - and somewhat obscure. Choosing a Thomas Dolby song for a Real Genius fanfic? Appropriate. Choosing a Thomas Dolby song that isn't "Blinded Me With Science?" A damn nice touch. Choosing the one that's my go-to- regain-some-faith-in-humanity song? Wow. Just - wow.

Second - this story is well into novelette territory, over half of novella length. And none of it is padding - every scene develops character. And this is mostly about character, although there is a plot and it does resolve quite nicely. The author has a wonderful grip on the canon characters, and develops how they would change and grow over the next fifteen-some-odd years in a completely believable fashion.

Spoilers & sex past this point )

In short: SQUEE! I loved this more than I can properly explain. More, I feel like my Yulegoat cared enough to look at my other fandoms (and possibly my music selections) to draw extra inspirations from. (Note: since I'm not caught up on canon, I didn't list Eureka as one of my fandoms this year, so they couldn't have gotten that one just from the Yulegoat Letter.) It's always so nice when someone puts the time and effort in to do a little research. <3

So I got in my Yuletide nominations. Just in case anyone was interested, they were RGB (characters: Ray, Egon, Janine, Winston), Last Starfighter (Alex, Grig, Centauri, the Beta Unit), and Phonogram (Seth, Silent Girl, Kohl, Emily).

If anyone wants me to write them Peter-fic for Yuletide, you'll have to nominate him separately, as I could only list four characters and I was guessing that he'd be the one most likely to be listed by someone else.

I had a hard time choosing characters for Phonogram, and I feel bad about choosing Emily over Lloyd, but I wanted to make sure that someone who had only read Rue Brittania wouldn't get locked out of asking or writing for it.

I didn't put up Eureka because I still haven't caught up on the canon, and I really wish I could have listed Pirate Radio (so much fun writing for it last year) or Real Genius, but I want to write in these more.

omorka: (Zane Is Bemused)
So here are my four:

For Yuletide proper, my assignment was for Eureka, Jack/Zane slash. And I said "I can do zat!," even though it's not a pairing I really would have thought about before. The result was He's A Runaway, which ended up (a) more as pre-slash than as slash, (b) a bit short of novelette length, and (c) with a slightly goofy subplot involving Deputy Andy. And Fargo wanders through the beginning and end of the fic in his role as Director of GD.

I wrote two treats, both in fandoms I'd never tried before. The more successful of the two is a short Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio) backstory fic for On-The-Hour John, News And Weather, Or Not. I enjoyed writing in this universe, and I love that character, but I probably need to rewatch the canon before trying it again.

The other one turned out awfully cracky. Issues With The Sound is a Misfits of Science x Still Crazy crossover, with an RGB reference thrown in at the end for good measure. The basic question is: what would happen if an RGB-style banshee showed up at the opening show of Johnny B's comeback tour? And the association of lightning with an outdoor concert meant that Strange Fruit just sort of had to show up, and . . . yeah. I was sleep-deprived when I wrote this, but I can't claim I didn't know what I was doing, so I'll just shut up now.

And I realized around the time the Yuletide archive opened that no one had written any GB/RGB, which clearly had to be fixed, so I searched around for a prompt and found a cute Egon one. I whipped up Purely For Science more or less on the spur of the moment - it's a brief encounter between Egon and Slimer, in the movieverse post-GB2.

I'll add them to my personal fic journal later today, when I get the time. For the moment, I need to get started on the Hoppin' John, or we'll be eating after 8:30.

I got two fics this year - one my assigned one, I'm guessing, and one a treat, since when I uploaded mine I had one "mystery work" in the gift section. They're both from what I figured would be the rarest of the four fandoms I requested: Moon. And they're both from GERTY's point of view.

Have I mentioned that I love AI stories and I kind of ship GERTY and S.A.R.A.H. (sorry, Andy)?

---

The first one is sort of experimentally written, very stream of consciousness, but it's easy to follow and tracks the character devlopment nicely. I appreciate the introduction to Sam-0 and the clues to how the cloning started, and the use of the emoticons. Also, my author clearly noticed that I'm a math geek - note the "spiral" motif and the section numbers. XD

The second one is more straighforward and fleshes out some of the backstory a little more; it's a different take, but not too different. It has a bit of pet motif for GERTY, which fits quite well, I thought. Both stories spend a lot of time with the model; this one incorporates it into the development of the Sams.

In short: squee! There's so very little fic for this fandom - I'm thrilled to see two excellent additions to the collection!
